Internships with Extra Hands

Internships are a great way to prepare yourself to begin your career after school. Employers rate internship experience as the number one most important criteria in the selection process for job candidates. Connections made during internships can often lead to future jobs. Those students who intern usually receive better job offers than students who do not. Internships provide a "real-world" work experience which is invaluable when entering the work force.

As an Extra Hands intern, you will be given the opportunity to explore your individual interests and talents, or to experience new ones. You will become a part of an innovative, grass roots program which is growing nationally and gaining nationwide attention. Extra Hands prides itself on empowering students; your thoughts and ideas are not only welcomed, they are encouraged.

What Extra Hands Interns Do
  • Recruit volunteers: Extra Hands is always looking for ways to let other students know about the volunteer opportunities we have. We use the internet, make presentations at schools, create flyers, and would welcome your suggestions about getting more students involved.
  • Help recruit and work with patients: If you are interested in a more hands on experience, we can train you to make presentations at support groups, do intakes with patients, and to find ways to provide more "Extra Hands" to ALS families.
  • Create marketing materials: If you are creative, good with graphic design, or looking to learn marketing skills, we welcome your help to spread the word about Extra Hands either locally or nationally.
  • Create resources for ALS patients and families: ALS is overwhelming. There are so many things patients and families need. We are always looking at ways to provide quick and easy information to families, or to find more ways to help. Our students have helped patients by creating communication tools, resource binders, or simply by looking up things online for individual patients.
  • Help with events: You may be interested in organizing your own event or helping out with one that is already being planned.
  • Help with fundraising: We use a variety of methods to help raise money to support the work we do and the research we fund. Our volunteers have created donation boxes, sold bracelets and built websites. We would love to hear your ideas for fundraising!
These are just some of the things you can do as an intern with us. Your area Program Manager can discuss these in detail with you and help you to figure out what things you would like to work on.
